The Short Answer: Our Eco-Friendly Measures
Absolute Zero has taken decisive measures to address the environmental impact of refrigerants. We have engineered our equipment to be fully compatible with a range of low-GWP (Global Warming Potential) refrigerants, including R410A, R134a, and natural refrigerants like R600a (isobutane). Furthermore, we guarantee that all new equipment we sell today will remain compliant with major international regulations, such as the EU F-Gas Regulation and the Kigali Amendment, for at least 15 years, protecting our customers from regulatory obsolescence.
In the refrigeration industry, the choice of refrigerant is one of the most significant factors affecting a system’s environmental footprint. As global regulations become increasingly strict to combat climate change, choosing equipment that uses future-proof refrigerants is not just an ethical choice—it’s a critical business decision.
At Absolute Zero, our approach to refrigerants is guided by two principles: environmental responsibility and investment protection.
The Challenge: Phasing Out High-GWP Refrigerants
For decades, the industry relied on hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) like R404A, which are powerful greenhouse gases. International agreements like the Kigali Amendment to the Montreal Protocol and regional laws like the EU F-Gas Regulation are mandating a steep phase-down of these high-GWP refrigerants.
This creates a major risk for businesses. Equipment that uses a soon-to-be-banned refrigerant can become a stranded asset, facing soaring refrigerant costs, service difficulties, and eventual forced replacement.
Absolute Zero’s Solution: A Multi-Faceted Strategy
We have implemented a comprehensive strategy to ensure our products are both eco-friendly and a safe long-term investment.
1. Compatibility with Next-Generation Refrigerants
We have proactively designed and tested our systems to work efficiently and reliably with the next generation of low-GWP refrigerants.
- A2L Refrigerants: Our systems are ready for mildly flammable A2L refrigerants like R32, which offer excellent efficiency and a much lower GWP than their predecessors.
- HFO Blends: We support the use of hydrofluoroolefin (HFO) blends, which are non-flammable and have an ultra-low GWP.
- Natural Refrigerants: For specific applications, we are champions of natural refrigerants. Our AZ-RC Series rotary compressors, for example, are optimized for use with R600a (isobutane), which has a GWP of just 3.
2. Optimizing for Minimum Refrigerant Charge
An often-overlooked aspect of environmental design is minimizing the amount of refrigerant in the system. Our AZ-BPHE Series Brazed Plate Heat Exchangers, for instance, can reduce the required refrigerant charge by up to 70% compared to traditional shell-and-tube heat exchangers, minimizing the potential environmental impact from leaks.
3. A 15-Year Compliance Guarantee
We understand that navigating the complex landscape of refrigerant regulations can be daunting. That’s why we make a simple promise to our customers:
Any new piece of equipment purchased from Absolute Zero today is guaranteed to be compliant with all major international refrigerant regulations for a minimum of 15 years.
This guarantee means you can invest with confidence, knowing that your equipment will not be forced into early retirement by changing laws.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Q: What is GWP?
A: GWP stands for Global Warming Potential. It’s a measure of how much heat a greenhouse gas traps in the atmosphere over a specific time period, compared to carbon dioxide (which has a GWP of 1). For example, the old refrigerant R404A has a GWP of 3,922, while the newer R410A has a GWP of 2,088.
Q: Can my existing Absolute Zero equipment be retrofitted with a newer, lower-GWP refrigerant?
A: In many cases, yes. Because we design for forward compatibility, many of our systems can be retrofitted to use a newer refrigerant with minimal changes. Please contact our technical support team with your model number to discuss your options.
Q: What is Absolute Zero’s stance on natural refrigerants like CO2 and ammonia?
A: We are strong proponents of using the right refrigerant for the right application. While we currently focus on HFCs and HFOs for our standard product lines, we have active R&D projects in both CO2 (R744) and ammonia (R717) systems for large-scale industrial applications and will be launching products in this space soon.
